ICE Accountability Project: Now Is the Time to Rein In ICE, Not Expand It
The ICE Accountability Project released the following statement as Congress considers DHS funding and proposals to expand ICE detention and enforcement capacity:
“Federal immigration enforcement needs more accountability, not more resources.
“ICE is a broken agency causing enormous harm— fatal shootings without any credible investigations, excessive force, illegal arrests without probable cause, denial of due process, warrantless raids, as well as widespread trauma and fear in communities across the country. Courts have repeatedly stepped in to curb these abuses, underscoring how far ICE has drifted from basic legal and constitutional limits.
“As the appropriations process plays out, the Trump White House is attempting to repurpose federal dollars to expand ICE detention beds and enforcement capacity. Congress holds the power of the purse, and it must not allow additional resources to flow to an agency already operating without meaningful accountability or oversight.
“Congress must reject any expansion of ICE and rein in its reign of terror.”
